〈丁級 vs. 頂級〉’D for Distinction’

’Visual Arts’ is not a compulsory subject in the education system of Hong Kong.  Generally speaking, only those who are talented or deeply interested in this subject would study this elective subject of Visual Arts.  Only they would then have an advantage to enter the Art department of universities.  Only they would then be able to easily reach the channel to go in the art world and become artists.  The number of artists who hold a Fine Arts degree, therefore, far exceeds the number of artists who do not have such academic background.  In other words, for one who does not hold an Arts degree, but want to become an outstanding artist, s/he must be extraordinarily passionate about art.

wen yau is an ambitious artist.  She is one of those who does not hold an Arts degree, but still has earned an outstanding position in Hong Kong contemporary art.  Without the academic training in Fine Arts, she does not bare the burden from traditions in her art-making.  Such background actually encourages her to be even more self-reflective and to have pure devotion in her art.

wen yau often uses sarcastic critiques to respond to her surroundings. I am a Grade D Artist exhibition showcases a series of works that are very personal, yet addressing the whole Hong Kong education system.  Her careful thoughts and planning with details can be seen in the whole project.  Amongst are various art-media, different experiences throughout years, the precise encounter with the very last public exams from the previous colonial era, the determination to sit the exams, the hardwork for exam preparation, the action of appealing after the exam result, the well organization of all the related data.  All these are carefully documented and shown in the current documentation exhibition to critically reveal how the local art educaiton system and exam systems cannot meet the need for the kind of art development urged by the upcoming international West Kowloon Cultural District.

If the local cultural and education government officials bear any critical mindset for reversal thinking, they are strongly recommended to visit the exhibit and welcome to raise their opinions.
