A French Lesson

– live performance, Quai General Durand, Sète, France, 13/09/2013

In my performance, I invited audience to teach me to do a “French Kiss” by making an announcement: Voudriez-vous, s’il vous plait, m’apprendre à faire un “French Kiss”? (can you please teach me to do a “French Kiss”?) in my broken French.  The notions of cultural authenticity, exoticism and intimacy in public space were explored when audience joined my performance one by one with hesitation, anxiety and enjoyment.  My French was spoken better and better after a few attempts, while my kissing skills were improved by different kissers.  It was ironic that, at last, a Swedish artist ‘successfully’ taught me to do a French Kiss and I managed to speak the French sentence more smoothly after repeating again and again for a few times.
