Finnish Sauna 芬蘭﹒慾

– site-specific live performance, 22/04/2012, Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art, Vaasa, Finland

I undressed and hid myself inside one of the very narrow cabinet-locker in the museum’s cloakroom. Inside the cabinet, where one could not move freely and casually, I tried to move around and then got dressed again with limited freedom of movement, and intended to explore physicality within confined space and hence restricted conditions of life.

Totally it took about 45 mins for me to get dressed up again inside the cabinet-locker.

Finland is renowned by its Finnish Sauna, which is a chilling retreat for people, especially in winter time.  The weather was still cold in April during my performance.  The small cabinet, which is designed for visitors keeping their overcoats, makes a contrast to the spacious room in the museum.  The local audiences are surprisingly polite and cool and keep a distance to my performance despite their desires to find out what happened inside the cabinet.  This makes my confinement within such small room in public space more alienated, and as a visitor of this foreign country, I throw a question about the spatial relationship of body, and the other-ness involved.
